Automated licence-plate recognition cameras — ALPR for short — have been installed in large numbers across the United States over the past few years, by police departments, city governments, and private communities. Flock Safety is one of the best known manufacturers. Many people would simply like to know whether this equipment is deployed where they live, work, or drive.
It turns out you can often tell, because the hardware announces itself over the air. This page explains what those signals are, what detecting one does and does not tell you, and how to check.
This is about knowing what is deployed around you — the same way you might notice a CCTV camera on a shop wall. It is not a guide to defeating, disabling, interfering with, or evading anything. Detection is passive listening to signals that are already being broadcast publicly. Nothing described here accesses any camera, network, or system.
Why these cameras are detectable at all
An ALPR camera is not just a lens. A typical installation is a small networked computer with a cellular or WiFi uplink, a solar panel and battery, and — importantly — short-range radio used for installation and maintenance. A technician needs to configure a unit on a pole without climbing it, so the device exposes a local wireless interface.
That maintenance interface is the giveaway. Like almost every Bluetooth or WiFi device, it broadcasts a name so that the right phone or laptop can find it. Those names follow consistent, machine-generated formats, and the devices announce them continuously to anyone within range, whether or not anyone is listening.
This is not a flaw or a secret. It is how the underlying radio standards work — your headphones and your printer do exactly the same thing.
What the signals actually look like
Working from a large public dataset of wardriving observations — over 23,000 recorded sightings collected by hobbyists mapping wireless networks — the broadcast names for this class of hardware turn out to be strikingly consistent:

Consistency at that level matters more than it might sound. It means recognition can be exact rather than approximate — and that difference is the whole ballgame for avoiding false alarms.
Why exact matching matters
Several hobbyist detectors match loosely: anything containing the word "flock", anything containing "penguin". That approach flags a Bluetooth speaker named Penguin, a home network called "Flock of Seagulls", and at least one unrelated commercial vehicle-tracking product whose name contains "flock" as a substring.
When we replayed both approaches against the field data plus a set of ordinary consumer device names, the loose patterns misidentified roughly two thirds of the benign names. Matching the full broadcast format instead — the complete structure a real unit emits, rather than a keyword inside it — identified every single real observation and none of the benign ones.
SentryRF is used by people worried about being followed. Telling someone their neighbour's speaker is police surveillance is not a harmless error — it feeds real anxiety with a false fact. A detector that cries wolf is worse than no detector, so we would rather match strictly and occasionally miss than match loosely and frighten people.
What detecting one tells you — and what it does not
This is the part most coverage skips, and it is the part that matters.

A camera on a pole at an intersection is doing what it was installed to do. It is not following you. SentryRF deliberately reports this class of device as infrastructure present nearby, not as a threat — it does not raise your threat level, it does not alarm, and it is scored differently from a tracker that moves with you between locations. Conflating the two would be its own kind of misinformation.
Learning how much of this equipment exists around you can be unsettling. That reaction is reasonable, and it is worth separating two questions: what is deployed here, and is anyone targeting me personally. They are different questions with different answers. If your concern is the second one — that a specific person is following or monitoring you — that is a safety matter rather than a technical one, and advocates who deal with stalking and domestic abuse handle exactly this. Is any of this legal?
Receiving radio signals that a device broadcasts publicly is ordinary use of your phone's Bluetooth and WiFi hardware — it is what happens every time your phone shows you a list of nearby networks. SentryRF does not connect to, log into, interfere with, or transmit anything to these devices. It listens, the same as your phone already does.
The broader questions — whether particular ALPR deployments are lawful, what data retention rules apply, who may access the records, and what oversight exists — are live legal and policy debates that vary considerably by state and city, and they are genuinely unsettled in places. We are a detection tool, not a law firm, and we do not take a position on them here. If you want to know what governs deployments in your area, your city council, state legislature, and local news coverage are the places that will actually have the answer.
How to check what is near you
You do not need special equipment. If you already have SentryRF installed:
- Open the app and start a scan.
- Go about your normal day — walk, drive, run errands. Detection happens in the background.
- Check the device list. Recognised ALPR and gunshot-detection hardware is labelled for what it is, with the reason it was identified.
- Use the Map view to see where you encountered it. That is usually more informative than any single detection, because it shows the deployment pattern along the routes you actually travel.
Range is limited — this is short-range radio, so realistically tens of metres, less through buildings. You will detect equipment you pass close to, not everything in your city. Detection also depends on the maintenance radio being enabled, which is a configuration choice made at installation, so absence of a detection is not proof of absence.
